Osteoporosis
What is it?
A chronic degenerative bone disease characterized by diminished bine mass and porous, brittle bones.
How do you develop it?
It can develop over time from habits of people during youth including eating, smoking drinking and exercise habits. Other factors that can cause osteoporosis are race, age, frame size and family history. Women are also more likely to develop osteoporosis than men.
How is it treated?
It cannot be cured, but is treated with a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, and exercise plan including weight-bearing exercises (aerobics, jogging/running, yoga, dancing and hiking), a healthy lifestyle that avoids smoking, drinking, bad eating habits and being sedentary, and taking necessary medications.
How can you avoid it?
-Be aware if it runs in your family or not
-Get enough calcium (1,000-1,300 mg a day)
-Get enough vitamin D (400-800 IU a day)
-Do regular weight-bearing and resistance exercises
-Avoid smoking and drinking
-Avoid too much caffeine, carbonated sodas and salt
